Now, More Than Ever

Thought For Today
Our thought for today1 is a lyrical message from They Might Be Giants (AKA TMBG), those nice boys I’ve previously lauded2 for composing and singing the best song from the category, “Pop Music Honoring The Life And Accomplishments Of James K. Polk,” and who are also responsible for the theme song of “Malcolm In The Middle,” (You’re Not) The Boss Of Me.
TMBG offers, in fact, a treasure trove of wisdom. Consider these quotes:
- We’ve done a lot of research on the ABCs and we’re ready to share that information with 3-year-olds everywhere. [Response to query about their album of children's songs]
- To paraphrase a quote that was given to the Grateful Dead, we’re not the best at what we do, but we’re the only ones who do it.
- Our songs remind you of songs you’ve never heard.
- The thing to bear in mind is when in a song we say “I killed my parents,” we’re not actually confessing to something in the song.
Today’s Thought
And, while listening to their Lincoln album this morning, I was certainly emotionally enriched by the line, (sung a la “Hair”) that celebrated “the spawning of the cage & aquarium.”

But their most poignant lyric from this CD - and the Heck Of A Guy official theme of the day for 11 October 2006 - is the epiphany from Lie Still Little Bottle,
Life is a placebo masquerading as a simile
After thinking about it for at least six years, there is still nothing I can add to that.
Footnotes
- A search of my email reveals that this was also the thought for Easter Sunday, 23 April 2000, as evidenced by my message sent that morning to the Duke of Derm. Well, the notion is as fitting today as it was then or, as per this post’s title, now, more than ever. ~back~
