Architecture To Wear

In followup to A Sketch Of Sketches Of Frank Gehry, the irreproachable Lawanda has informed me that Tiffany & Co. has offered the Gehry Collection of jewelry since Spring 2006. [Note: In the above photo, the Gehry earrings dangle from the lobes of Christina Ricci; the ownership regrets the inevitable confusion caused by Ms Ricci's resemblance to Lawanda.]

The idea of designing jewelry has intrigued me for a long time, particularly the notion of creating shapes on a whole new scale. Jewelry is an art form and it’s an interesting one in that it is a very personal expression of the wearer’s style and personality.

Themes in the jewelry collection are congruent with Gehry’s architectural motifs. These Torque bracelets, for example, share the same pattern of curved planes that characterize many of Gehry’s signature buildings.

Similarly, the fish pendants, pictured here, reflect his fascination with the forms and shapes of that animal noted in the documentary film and exemplified in this Gehry structure in Barcelona.

Early holiday shoppers will be interested to learn that prices run from $275 for a set of piscine cufflinks to an upper range that includes a $750,000 collar formed from white gold mesh interlaced with diamonds and pearls (worn by Anjelica Huston in the photo below), evoking Gehry’s proposal for wrapping the Times Square Tower in metal mesh.
