We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties

The DrHGuy household, including the Heck Of A Guy International Corporate Headquarters, Think Tank, and Curio Shoppe has been and continues to be dis-internetted following a storm yesterday that produced only a modest accumulation, by local standards, of 8-12 inches of snow but compensated for its pusillanimity with concomitant icing and winds precisely ideal for creating a thin but stalwart crystalline barrier atop the satellite dish on which we rely for internet access here in the bucolic boonies.1

Somehow, it just doesn’t seem fair that the signal originating from the internet is successfully relayed through the StarBand hub facility in Marietta, Georgia to a geostationary satellite orbiting 22,300 miles above the equator where it is redirected another 22,300 miles back to earth (or at least earth as we know it in unincorporated McHenry County, Illinois) only to screech to a halt perhaps 0.15 inch from the surface of that contraption that resembles (and is currently as functional as) a hubcap mounted on a tripod on the roof.

If this is indeed a just, well managed cosmos, wouldn’t one assume that a transmission task that must be a 99% success statistically would be granted partial credit and eke out a tiny internet connection?

Apparently not.

In any case, until the virtual glacier melts,2 I’ll be limited to sporadically e-mailing and blogging, depending on when I can drag my carcass and laptop, as I have on this occasion, to the local Border’s/T-Mobile hotspot.

  1. This is, of course, a tentative diagnosis but one based on my vast clinical experience (i.e., it’s happened once before in the 3-4 years our internet access has been via satellite). []
  2. By the way, I hate to complain, but haven’t Al Gore and his cinematic doppelganger been proclaiming for some time now that global warming is upon us? Well, where is it when you need it? []
