Converting Mobile Phone Numbers Into Email Addresses

[DrHGuy is still tinkering with the blogworks. In keeping with the themes of efficiency and utility, he offers this how-to tip.]

DrHGuy is not into text messaging via mobile phone, crackberry, or similar devices of Satan but does occasionally wander into situations in which it is advantageous to contact someone by zapping a message to his or her mobile communication device.

There was, for example, a question yesterday that required information from the Prodigal, who was, inconveniently enough, attending school. The optimal methodology was forwarding a text message to that youngster’s multi-talented cell phone, requesting that he call home at his first opportunity. Sending this message from DrHGuy’s own cell phone was, of course, possible but would have required re-learning that rarely used methodology.

Not to worry. Happily, if one has access to regular ol’ e-mail – & DrHGuy certainly does – and the recipient’s mobile phone service is one of the six listed below – & the Prodigal’s certainly is – the task resolves into a simple matter of

  1. Choosing the appropriate format by service:

    T-Mobile:
    phonenumber@tmomail.net

    Virgin Mobile:
    phonenumber@vmobl.com

    Cingular:
    phonenumber@cingularme.com

    Sprint:
    phonenumber@ messaging.sprintpcs.com

    Verizon:
    phonenumber@ vtext.com

    Nextel:
    phonenumber@messaging.nextel.com

Where phonenumber = the recipient’s 10 digit phone number without spaces, dashes, or parentheses
E.g., 4172325678@vmobl.com is in the correct format
    NOT 417-232-5678@vmobl.com
    NOT 417 232 5678@vmobl.com
    NOT (417)232-5678@vmobl.com

  2. Entering the result into the “To:” box of the e-mail form
  3. Entering the text of the message
  4. Hitting “Send”
