Leonard Cohen Song You’ve Heard, But (Probably) Not This Way
Leonard Cohen & Sonny Rollins On Night Music With David Sanborn
Night Music With David Sanborn, co-hosted by Jools Holland, ran on TV from 1988 to 1989, featuring guests such as Miles Davis, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Warren Zevon, Charlie Haden, The Residents, The Pixies, and Pere Ubu.
One of the highlights of the show was Sonny Rollins (pictured below) jamming with Leonard Cohen on Who By Fire.

Just outstanding.

Lyrics: Who By Fire
And who by fire, who by water,
who in the sunshine, who in the night time,
who by high ordeal, who by common trial,
who in your merry merry month of may,
who by very slow decay,
and who shall I say is calling?
And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate,
who in these realms of love, who by something blunt,
and who by avalanche, who by powder,
who for his greed, who for his hunger,
and who shall I say is calling?
And who by brave assent, who by accident,
who in solitude, who in this mirror,
who by his lady’s command, who by his own hand,
who in mortal chains, who in power,
and who shall I say is calling?

I’m looking forward to hearing this rendition, but the link doesn’t work. I’ll check back by tomorrow :-).

Hmmm. It works for me now. Maybe it was a temporary glitch. In any case, I’ve added a direct link to the YouTube site should problems arise again. Sorry for the hassle; it is really a great piece.
