Two Sunday Hallelujahs

An Abundance Of Covers: Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah

There are already enough covers of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, with more certain to follow, to fuel endless arguments about which is superior.

Jeff Buckley’s version may be as well known as Cohen’s own, and while both are moving, today I’m recommending two impressive performances, one by Over The Rhine and the other by Gordon Downie, that may be less familiar to most listeners.

Over The Rhine, based in Cincinnati, is one of those bands beloved of critics, other musicians (including Bob Dylan), and a bigger-than-a-cult but smaller-than-a-teeming-mass contingent of fans.

Gordon Downie from The Tragically Hip performs Hallelujah on the soundtrack of “Saint Ralph,” which IMDB calls,

the unlikely story of Ralph Walker, a ninth grader who outran everyone’s expectations except his own in his bold quest of trying to win the 1954 Boston Marathon. … Desperate to believe a miracle will bring his mother out of a coma, Ralph becomes a convert to the church of running.

  1. My Old Kentucky Blog has collected many covers of this beautiful song. It’s not the most covered of Leonard Cohen songs - others such as Suzanne being way ahead. Still, it’s becoming the best known of his songs to a new generation. And, with its inclusion in Shrek, an ever younger audience!

I recommend the version by Allison Crowe (of whom I love many recordings):
