Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, Acadia National Park
The Lord of Leisure1 Photo Gallery
Risking his tripod and, one assumes, himself to the wild surf of Maine, the Lord of Leisure secured this awe-inducing offshore perspective of the quintessential New England lighthouse.
The original 32-foot Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, standing 56 feet above mean high water, was built at the southwestern point of Mount Desert Island in 1858 at a cost of $5,000. A fog bell and tower were added in 1876. A concise history and several photographs of the lighthouse and outbuildings over the years can be found at Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse History

- Lord of Leisure was previously known in these posts as Mr. Science. Both Lord of Leisure and Mr Science spend most of their time disguised as Neil Ellis, mild-mannered, retired teacher at a great suburban school system, who can identify a bird by its call, complete the New York Times Friday Crossword in ink, and snap a heck of a photo. Please continue prevailing on Mr. Science, Lord of Leisure, to provide a heck of a photo now and then. I’m impressed, and I’d love to stand on that rock for a while.
