Sister 7 - Semi-Obscure Sexy Songs For A Summer Saturday

Sister 7
Sister 7,1 unlike M2aria, the group featured in last Saturday’s post, Undeservedly Obscure, Orphaned Music That’s Too Good To Miss, produced albums with major labels and placed a couple of songs in Billboard’s Top 20. Like M2aria, however, Sister 7 failed to achieve, by my reckoning, the popularity it deserved.
In the case of Sister 7, the group never reached the tipping point to transcend from a much-beloved Austin band with a devoted, near-fanatical following to a pervasively known, headlining band selling out large venues everywhere.
Consequently, after a decade of being on the road almost continuously, the group disbanded in 2001. Since then, all four musicians of Sister 7, Patrice Pike, Wayne Sutton, Darrell Phillips, and Sean Phillips, have been active professionally, creating solo projects and working with other artists. The group also held a reunion concert in late 2006.
The Sister 7 Sound

The band’s last studio album as “Wrestling Over Tiny Matters.”2 The musicianship of Sister 7 on this CD is extraordinarily solid with tightly woven melodies and a textured sound enhanced to symphonic levels. The often introspective lyrics are smart and evocative.
I’ve chosen three tracks from “Wrestling Over Tiny Matters” that are enjoyable anytime but are especially fitting for a sunny Saturday in July.
Music
Kiss Me Baby is a personal favorite, a good-time summer melody that never fails to trigger images of taking the main squeeze to the beach in her daddy’s convertible to lock lips.
Under The Radar is a sweet tender love song that rocks.
Fallen Angel is worth a listen just to hear the authority and confidence in Patrice Pike’s voice as well as its Annie Lennox tinge.

Footnotes
- Sister 7 was previously known as Little Sister; unfortunately, so were a half-dozen other bands, a statistic that led to the name change. ~back~
- The only upside I can find from the undeserved obscurity of Sister 7 is that this morning a used copy of “Wrestling Over Tiny Matters” can be had for $0.50. ~back~
