Software For Starving Students
Software for Starving Students is a group of computer programs that perform the basic functions needed by students (although the programs are available to non-students as well), including, as the site’s blurb puts it, “a fully-featured office suite, a cutting-edge web browser, multi-media packages, academic tools, utilities and more.”
Of course, having the necessary programs all in one place is nice but hardly special.

Sample software description from Software For Starving Students CD
Making the collection special are the following:
- The programs are best-in-class. There are no clinkers in the batch. And, an easy-to-use installer is included.
- There are two groups of programs, one for Windows and one for OS X.
- The cost is zip, nada, zilch, zero - the whole shooting match is free free free free.
The programs are available as a download at Software For Starving Students Downloads. The only tricky bit is that the download is a disc image file that has to be burned to a CD in a certain manner. It turns out that this process is just a drag and drop affair on a Mac but those using Windows will need an ISO burner program, such as Nero or the freeware Active ISO Burner.
A complete list of the software programs is available at Questions and Answers. The home page is Software for Starving Students

101 Shareware and Freeware Programs Every Nerd Needs is an annotated listing of stellar programs with links for downloading. Many of these are also freeware and the others are far less costly than the Microsoft Office/Adobe Photoshop/Dreamweaver category of software.
These programs work only on Windows platforms (sorry, Mac-lovers) and include offerings from these software categories: Audio, Browsers, Desktop Enhancements, Download/Upload Clients, E-Mail Tools, FAX and Telephony, Graphics & Photo, Internet Surfing, iPod Tools, MySQL Database Tools, Networking, Office Productivity, Personal Finance, Programming, Security, System Utilities, and more.

SSS is a little out of date. I’m not complaining, mind you, but I wish it were updated.
Check out similar, but more up-to-date FOSS for Windows collections at http://www.theopencd.org and at http://www.ttcsweb.org/osswin-cd

Sigh, if only I wasn’t the only person in the US still on dial-up. A girl can dream though. Sigh.

The concept of OpenCD is indeed similar to Software For Starving Students. I chose SSS partly because I prefer some of the programs they selected but mostly because SSS offers both Windows and OS X programs.

This looks like a great resource - for students and teachers, too ;->.
