MOJO Taps Leonard Cohen For Holiday Carols

A press release published last night announces that  MOJO magazine will issue a Leonard Cohen tribute CD as part of their December issue (available November 1). 1 Further, Cohen will be featured in the print and online content of that publication as well as the affiliated radio programming.

This excerpt from that blurb conveys the currently available information:2

It’s been a wonderful year for appreciation of poet and songwriter+ Leonard Cohen -  highlighted by all the live performances, and, the love that’s flowed famously at the Glastonbury Festival and more concerts across North America and Europe.

MOJO magazine, one of the world’s great music publications, has put together a delightful tribute – one well-designed and timed to raise the banner high over a year that’s been very special for lovers of Cohen, just turned 74. As they explain it: “The November 1 issue of MOJO (cover dated December) is celebrating deep and moving music, the kind of stuff we need in the run up to the holiday period. The accompanying MOJO cover mounted CD will be made up of 15 tired and emotional masterpieces from the pen of veteran songwriter Leonard Cohen.”

Here be the final running order of the tracks on the upcoming tribute album:

1 Suzanne 3:42 – Ian McCulloch
2 In My Secret Life 4:23 – Katie Melua
3 Hey That’s No Way To Say Goodbye 3:02 – Claudine Longet
4 Sisters Of Mercy 3:34 – Dion
5 Story Of Isaac 4:09 – Linda Thompson
6 Priests 4:01 – Eyeless In Gaza
7 Joan of Arc 4:55 – Allison Crowe
8 Hallelujah 5:46 – Susanna And The Magical Orchestra
9 Avalanche 5:13 – Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds
10 Chelsea Hotel No.2 4:19 – Josh Ritter
11 Take This Longing 6:16 – Phil Campbell
12 Tower Of Song 3:46 – Martha Wainwright
13 Song For Bernadette 4:21 – Judy Collins
14 Famous Blue Raincoat 5:08 – The Handsome Family
15 Tonight Will Be Fine 2:45 – Mr David Viner

Alongside the MOJO cover-mount CD, there’s expected to be plenty of love for Leonard Cohen reigning o’er the magazine’s print and online editions, in Q magazine, and on MOJO Radio next month.

  1. I have belatedly discovered that substantially the same information was available 4 October 2008 at the Eyeless In Gaza blog.
  2. The interesting word choices, creative punctuation, and unusual cadences are from the original press release. Specifically, I am unaware of the significance of the  plus sign (”+”) that appears just after “songwriter” in the first line. I am assuming that it is the proofreader who is tired and that the “CD will be made up of 15 tired tried and emotional masterpieces from the pen of veteran songwriter Leonard Cohen,” although admittedly “tried and emotional” is not an expected pairing of modifiers. As for “… love for Leonard Cohen reigning o’er … ” and “Here be the final running order of the tracks … ” (my emphasis), I can only guess that someone is confused about the date of this year’s “Talk Like A Pirate Day” (it was September 19).

Arrr, matey, there be no pirates here. Unless that’s RIAA-speak. The artist I serve is named Crowe, not Sparrow!

We in the colonies tend toward eccentric uses of language. I cannot answer whether it be “tired” or “tried” that the writer intended – still, I’ve taken it be be tired, as in the world-weary tag that is sometimes attached to Leonard Cohen’s music. Though the world is coming to know the joyful Lenny, his music, to some ears, still lacks the bounce of most top-of-the-popsters.

I can explain the + – for I penned that – and it refers to the fact that Mr. Cohen is more than a poet and songwriter, but, in the context of this item, it’s not his role as novelist+ which be germane.

And, indeed, Eyeless in Gaza posted of the MOJO tribute album, but, since then, the actual running order of the tracks has become known. One track was dropped and two new added – so, you now show the songs that will be heard together in just a few weeks time – unless ye be walking the plank before then…
