Hazelle Jackson, fresh from attending two Leonard Cohen concerts, alerts us to this rendition of “Hallelujah” by Katherine Jenkins, a young opera singer whose new album, Sacred Arias, includes this song as one of its tracks.1 The recent “Hallelujah” epidemic notwithstanding, the quality and style of Ms Jenkins’ version warrant a listen.
Happy Holidays
While it’s Thanksgiving only here in the U.S., I hope the spirit of this holiday is part of your life, wherever your home may be.
- Hazelle hazards the opinion, with which I agree, that “Hallelujah” hardly qualifies as sacred. As it turns out, the definition of aria is so basic (a representative description is “a self-contained piece for one voice, usually with instrumental accompaniment”) that “Hallelujah” may well meet criteria for that classification.↩
