Manic Monday Morning Music

As we come out of the the turn into the final straightaway to the Christmas finish line, rousing ourselves to meet the holiday criteria  that have evolved from the unholy alliance of  Judaeo-Christian tradition, the Protestant work ethic, and c0mmerialism requires a symphonic adrenaline boost, a Red Bull equivalent transfigured into eighth notes.

While the traditonal carols and their contemporary counterparts, such as RuPaul’s Hard Candy Christmas, are lovely and the recent tsunami of Hallelujah covers,1 are moving, they are simply not up to the task.

Coping with last minute shopping and decorating calls for an intensely caffeinated, hyper-focused, crank the volume to 11, near manic sort of acceleration and for reaching that death-defying velocity, nothing nothing beats Spinal Tap blasting “Christmas With The Devil.”

In this video, the lads are rocking out on the Arsenio Hall Show. While the video is less than pristine, the intent, energy, and imagery come across with unmistakable effectiveness. Worthy of special note is Nigel’s guitar. I can’t be certain because of the blurry video, but his instrument appears to be sporting a double handful of pick-ups and what may be a tachometer.

The Monday Mood Modulation

Monday morning becomes Monday afternoon and at some magic moment, one realizes that, as the man says, …

Once the tree is up, the gifts are wrapped, and the non-gendered gingerbread people have been baked, we need to dial it down from 11. So, snuggle close to the one you’re with, pour a double helping of Chocolodka, and listen to the soothing sounds of – yep – a cover of “Christmas With The Devil.”

Judith Owen sings and plays piano on this sweetly jazzy version of the Spinal Tap hit.  And, in case you’re wondering, that is indeed Harry Shearer on the upright bass.

Bonus: Arsenio Interviews Spinal Tap

This segment is from the same show as the video of Spinal Tap playing Christmas With The Devil and includes the group’s analysis of their biggest hit, “Sex Farm” as a “valentine with livestock.”
