It’s another Leonard Cohen Doppelgänger alert.
The initial sighting is documented at Okay, NOW What the Hell?!, a posting by Kevin Murphy, AKA Tom Servo of Mystery Science Theater 3000:
Man. I turn my back from the mass media for one minute and another startling conspiracy surfaces. Why am I the one who has to unmask the real identity of prolific, brilliant, half-mad author Neil Gaiman?
Why didn’t anyone else see this coming? Why am I the only one to realize that Neil is actually groaning, tortured, half-mad folk-rock poet Leonard Cohen, who maintains his astonishing youth and beauty by feasting on the pineal glands of innocent women?! I mean come on, even the microphone is the same!! Jeez, I feel like Rowdy Roddy Piper here!
For the response to Mr Murphy’s seemingly rhetorical queries, we turn to The awful truth, a posting on Mr. Gaiman’s own blog:
I dunno.
(Strangely, as I write this, I’m sitting on the sofa with Holly watching Lou Reed introduce Leonard Cohen at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as we clear out unwatched stuff on the TIVO).
Excuse me. I must pause to nibble a pineal gland.
For those viewers who have suddenly developed a craving for pineal glands but discover the pantry is bare and that Peapod doesn’t carry them, Heck Of A Guy provides this handy guide to the location of that organ.
As ongoing readers know, I have been skeptical of some perceived similarities between Leonard Cohen and others. Because, however, I’m a fan of Mr. Murphy and Mr. Gaiman as well as, of course, Mr. Cohen, I wanted to give the Leonard Cohen – Neil Gaiman: Two Identities, One Person Hypothesis a chance.
In best CSI/NCIS fashion, I ran the likenesses through my databases and found some prospective matches to allow viewers to reach their own conclusions.1 Click on the image to enlarge.

From Beyond is a horror film directed by Stuart Gordon and released in 1986. The film deals with a pair of scientists who are trying to stimulate the pineal gland with a device called The Resonator. An unforeseen result of their experiments is the ability to perceive creatures from another dimension, who proceed to drag the head scientist into their world. He later returns as a grotesque shape-changing monster and preys upon the others at the laboratory. Do you suppose Mr. Gaiman is is possession of said “Resonator” and is infact the embodiment of Mr. Cohen from another dimension? Just a thought.
You forgot Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek (Spock or Spok).
Sorry, I found your page with Spok on it. Leonard Cohen and Leonard Nimoy seperated at bitrth. Nevermind.
