TAKE A BOW: As close to perfection in live music - and poetry - as you will ever get.

OK, the quote from the review is actually “as close to perfection in live music – and poetry – as you will ever get,” but you try coming up with an eye-catching headline for yet another glowing review of yet another incredible Cohen concert.

Besides, we don’t want Leonard becoming complacent just as his tour is reaching the U.S., do we?

Because Everybody (Already) Knows, The Condensed Leonard Cohen Concert Review

As yet another Heck Of A Guy public service, the review of Leonard Cohen’s January 22, 2009 concert in Auckland has been compressed for efficient reading:

From Gig review: Leonard Cohen in Auckland1

Opening: Leonard Cohen’s Auckland performance was as close to perfection in live music – and poetry – as you will ever get.

Closing: … it was an honour to be [at the concert].

In Between: … came onstage to a standing ovation … sellout crowd …repeated stage calls … distinctive voice is unchanged and powerful … beguiling smile … very droll sense of humour … [songs] sounded fresh and new … in the concrete pit that is Vector [Arena], they sounded clear … fresh and relevant … lyrics are often very sexual, yet always sensual, subtle and, at times, simply sweet … a striking humility and humanity … yet “cheerfulness keeps breaking through” … an utter gentleman … marvellous band … Sharon Robinson could easily hold an audience … Hattie and Charlotte Webb2 proved spellbinding … highlight was Cohen’s awesome political statement, Democracy Is Coming To The USA … new anthem of our times.

Now For Something, Well, Kinda Different

Concert Video – Bird On A Wire

This is a well done video of Bird On A Wire with decent sound and much better than usual camera work from the live performance in Auckland.

Addendum: As Life’s Elsewhere points out in the comments, the lyrics Cohen sings here are not the same as those heard on the recorded versions. Cohen has, however, frequently introduced new verses to this song. There is a discussion of this and some examples of previous changes in the lyrics as well as a general examination of Like A Bird On The Wire at Like A Flock Of Birds On The Wire.

  1. Life's Elsewhere

Is he singing ‘Bird on a Wire’ with changed lyrics?

  2. Good catch on the lyrics. These aren’t the words heard on the recorded versions, but Cohen has frequently introduced new verses to this song. See Like A Flock Of Birds On The Wire for some examples.
