Jian Ghomeshi

When I posted Must Read – Preview Of Leonard Cohen CBC Interview With Jian Ghomeshi, I invoked a narcissistic world view that held that anyone outside the range of CBC radio would, like me, be clueless about “Q” and would, like me, discover that Wikipedia describes it as “a national arts magazine show which features correspondents from across Canada” broadcast on CBC Radio One.  And, so far, that contention appears to be holding true.

I also believed, however, that everyone, again like me, would immediately realize that the Q Program Host Jian Ghomeshi, whose interview with Leonard Cohen will be broadcast in April, was formerly the Moxy Früvous Singer-Songwriter Jian Ghomeshi. After all, how many Canadian  Jian Ghomeshi’s  can there be?

Moxy Früvous

Only after surreptitiously testing a few acquaintances on their knowledge of politically savvy, socially aware, culturally relevant, allusion-heavy, literate, preferentially satirical Canadian bands of the 1990s with heavy folk influence and a non-exclusive predilection for a Capella singing did I realize that Moxy Früvous is not, at least in the Kingdom of Northern Illinois, a well-known musical entity.

And that’s a shame.

Although Moxy Früvous gave their last concert, other than the occasional get-together for fans, in 2000, listening to  their music is still a kick.

Their biggest hit was “King of Spain,” my kids got off on “Green Eggs and Ham,” and those not fans of Rush Limbaugh really got off on “The Greatest Man in America,” but my personal favorite is “My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors.” Since this is my blog, …

OK, hands up – how many want to hear Leonard Cohen singing lead with Moxy Früvous on a special verse of “My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors” that features Beautiful Losers, The Favorite Game, and The Spice-Box of Earth? Me too. Happily, it turns out that Jian Ghomeshi is also an impressive interviewer. There are many videos on YouTube featuring his Q interviews and other performances. I’ve selected the Qtv interview with John Malkovich, which shows Ghomeshi’s comfort with discussions of ideas and his ability to accommodate to the subject’s style and pace.

And to show his range, here’s Jian Ghomeshi’s outstanding interview with the differently paced Super Dave Osborne.1

  1. Bonus: This interview mentions the apparently little known fact that Super Dave is the brother of one of my favorite comedians, Albert Brooks (his Lost In America is an undervalued classic
