Leonard Cohen Sings The Blues In Venice
The post published earlier today,1st Video, New Leonard Cohen Song – The Darkness, contained most of the new song but was missing a short portion at the beginning. The video below, also recorded during the August 3, 2009 Venice sound check captures the new song, “The Darkness,” in its entirety.
Playing guitar and singing this song, Leonard Cohen, clad in fedora and suit, is transformed from folk singer or crooner to bluesman. Now all he needs is an appropriate nickname.
Howlin’ Lennie Cohen? Honeybee Cohen? Lugubrious Leonard Cohen? Maple Leaf Norm? Skinny Lennie Cohen? Smokin’ Leonard Cohen?
I’ll work on that.
Leonard Cohen – The Darkness (Venice Sound Check)
Update: The latest set of lyrics I’ve found are from merton at LeonardCohenForum:
….. it was drinking from your cup,
I got the darkness
from your little ruby cup
I said ‘is this contagious?’
You said ‘just drink it up’
I’ve got no future baby
I know my days are few
I’ve got no future though
As I say I know my days are few
Is the present not that pleasant (?)
Just a lot of things to do
I don’t like your sticky little bud
I don’t like alcohol
I don’t need your loving touch
That’s always been your call
Cause there’s nothing but the darkness
Makes any sense to me at all
I should have seen the darkness
It was right behind your eyes
All those pools so deep and heartless
I just had to take a dive
Ah yea but winning you was easy
Ah but the darkness was the price
Got no future (x3)
Yea I know the days are few
The present is not that pleasant(?)
Just a lot of things to do
(AND THEN QUASIMODO THE BELLS THE BELLS !!!!)

Howlin’ Lenny Boy
)
Simple blues, but I suppose it’s the best possible arrangement for these overwhelming lyrics… The only thing which doesn’t suit me are solo parts. This is not a blues band, for sure
Yup, But Lenny wrote the song, and as with many others, this one will also evolve and be refined over time.
Any lyrics up for this one yet?
