Four Leonard Cohen Video Blasts From The Past

I’m certain I could manufacture a factitious commonality linking these four Leonard Cohen performances to explain why they were selected as companion pieces for this post.

But, that would be wrong – and would entail more mental effort than would be seemly on a Saturday morning.

All four videos are interesting, entertaining, and enjoyable. And, they do afford the opportunity to view Leonard Cohen in a variety of incarnations.

Also, all four of these videos, ranging from 16-35 years old) were uploaded to YouTube by a1000kissesdeep, the YouTubeonym of Tom Sakic, the proprietor of A Thousand Kisses Deep, whose collection of videos and knowledge of all thing Cohen frequently grace Heck Of A Guy posts.1 The titles and comments below are also Tom’s.

Leonard Cohen: Dance Me to the End of Love – Live in Roskilde 1988

“Leonard Cohen Live Fra Roskilde Festival ’88″ Opening of the show with “Dance Me To The End Of Love”

Until 2008/2009 Leonard Cohen was very rarely giving the open air shows (only couple in Summer of 1988 and 1993). This clip shows him on wave of his new 1988 popularity, overwhelmed by the screaming welcome from new & young audience on then-very-hip open-air festival at Roskilde, Denmark, July 2, 1988.

Leonard Cohen: The Guests (TV 1979)

Leonard Cohen singing “The Guests”, lead single from his new album “Recent Songs” (Columbia, 1979), on French TV in October 1979. His singing is live, but it seems that the music comes from the instrumental track of the album.

Leonard Cohen: Waiting for the Miracle (Live 1993)

Leonard Cohen – Waiting for the Miracle, recorded from the audience at Alt Oper in Frankfurt, 27 May 1993

1993 version of this 1992 song (co-written by Sharon Robinson) has beautiful live arrangements and long instrumental intro. Cohen presents: Paul Ostermayer on the flute, Bill Gin on the keyboards, Bob Furgo on the violin.
