When Leonard Cohen Is What Happens In Vegas, The Videos Don't Stay In Vegas

November 28th, 2009 · No Comments · Leonard Cohen

More videos from the Leonard Cohen concert in Las Vegas and even one from the Kansas City show have completed the sometimes hazardous journey from memory cards  to YouTube in the past few days. Heck Of A Guy offers this sampling of the Las Vegas and Kansas City performances because (1) they are enjoyable watching and (2) it’s a long time until March 1, 2010 when the Leonard Cohen World Tour starts touring again.

Leonard Cohen, Closing Time (Las Vegas, 11/12/2009)

Of special note in this video is bass guitarist and Tour Musical Director, Roscoe Beck, who, sans spectacles and displaying a nicely tailored suit as well as a (by all accounts) dashing new haircut (a transition in coiffures which has not gone unnoticed by a growing cadre of  female fans), puts out a refreshingly animated rockabilly vibe, a la Carl Perkins, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Young Elvis Presley, … . For comparison, see “Closing Time,” the first video of  Leonard Cohen Goes Crazy Twice In Belgrade, in which the then pony-tailed Beck is somber and significantly less expressive performing the same song only 10 weeks earlier.  According to the LeonardCohenForum post by bridger15,1

At the Las Vegas concert, where Roscoe first appeared with his new sexy haircut, [Leonard Cohen] introduced him at the end of “Anthem” as: “Roscoe, The Kid is Back, Beck.”

Viewers possessed of perceptibilities so pristine that they are vulnerable to skin eruptions or seizures when confronted with imperfections in videos should up their dosage of the appropriate medications before exposing themselves to the final third of the following recording, which is interrupted by the videographer’s coughing. Hardier sorts, however, will find the benefits  of watching outweigh the risks.
