I Have Seen The Future, Baby – And It’s Abridged

Leonard Cohen appeared on the 16 April 1993 Tonight Show with Jay Leno.¹ According to Diamonds In The Mine, Cohen performed a shortened version of The Future, which included changing “Give me crack and anal sex” to “Give me speed and careless sex.” In banter that followed the song, he noted

It was very gracious of you to invite me to chop this song in half’.

Perla Batalla and Julie Christensen, however, were not only complete but were also in fine form.

I ws in the middle of being a “non-traditional” college student when Leonard Cohen played the US in 1992—??? I had not time for anything but NPR and crappy food from Rathskeller Hall. However, I spent three years in Canada, and heard this unique arrangement of ‘Closing Time.’ from a guy named Cohen…I am addicted and want no cure Thanks. Needless to say I had to find more songs! I am a rabid fan now, and laughed when you stated you might be a fan if you claim to be be part Canadian on your census. I DO still have my Canadian Driver’s license, and a deep love of the North above the 50Th parallel. LC has made my crummy journey very interesting over the last 6 years. Forget Maslow and Rogers, a few hours of Cohen is a shot in the arm.! I have an old DSM-IV that deserves an upgrade. Thanks for the idea Dr. H Huy.

"Do I Have To Dance All Night" was performed many times in concerts but was never released in the US.

As part of my crusade to popularize this song, I've cobbled together 2 videos - one for the semi-funky 1976 version with Laura Branigan and one for the 1980 more gypsy, less disco version - that kinda sorta fit the music.

Both videos include links to keys to the sources of the clips and the identities of the backup singers and others who are featured.

Leonard Cohen & Joni Mitchell? Yes, They Were

Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen had a fling in the 1960s that, for unspecified reasons, was short-lived, with Cohen instigating the parting.

It was then and is now a complex connection. In 1988, Cohen said, I'm still very friendly with Joni - I had dinner with her before the tour, and I have the same admiration for her as you do. But I think it was Noel Harrison who came up to me in the LA Troubadour and said "How do you like living with Beethoven?"
