Leonard Cohen – Het Concertgebouw, Amsterdam May 31, 1976
Pete Purnell, who took these photos, writes about becoming a Leonard Cohen fan and using his photos as a means of reliving the concerts:
In England in the late ’60’s there was a music program on the radio on Sunday afternoons, John Peel, a disc jockey, with “alternative” records and live music. As I remember it Leonard Cohen sang Suzanne and when he finished John Peel simply said, “That’s what this is all about, being able to let you hear music like this”.
Since then I’ve been a fan.
Some people have a photographic memory and can quote set-lists and compare various versions of particular songs. The only photographic thing about me is my camera. Sometimes it seems a pity that I can’t go back in my mind and re-live each concert as it was. All I do know is that I had a good time and have a feeling of deep satisfaction at having been there. The photos act as my own personal trigger, I can’t imagine what memories I would have without the photos.
Leonard Cohen In Concert 1974-1993: Photos By Pete Purnell: Pete Purnell contributed remarkable photos from the 2012 Leonard Cohen Tour (see Aug 22, 2012 Amsterdam Concert and 2012 Ghent & Amsterdam Concerts). Consequently, when he mentioned photos he had taken at Cohen concerts in the 1970s and 1980s, I was eager to view them. And, when I saw these outstanding images, I was eager to post them for others to savor as well. Leonard Cohen In Concert 1974-1993: Photos By Pete Purnell comprises five photo sets, each typically containing four black and white shots, of Leonard Cohen concerts between 1974 and 1993.
