Best Of 2012 Leonard Cohen Tour Video Setlist

The Selections

The list below comprises the best available1 video of each of the songs performed in concert during the 2012 Leonard Cohen Old Ideas World Tour.2

“Best” is a subjective judgement that takes into account both the quality of the performance and the video itself. That judgement is also influenced by special factors. The calculations, for example, that resulted in the choice of a Dublin performance of “So Long, Marianne” factored in not only the traditional singalong skills of the audience but also my wish to avoid the messages conveying disapproval and threats of violence that would inevitably follow were I to choose a video of Leonard Cohen singing that song anywhere other than Ireland. Similarly, the Berlin performance was the presumptive choice for “First We Take Manhattan,” if for no other reason than to hear the crowd roar out “Then we take Berlin.”

Titles from the Old Ideas album are marked in red.  The order is an approximation of a combined setlist of the shows.3

This is a dynamic list; the current selections may give way to even better versions at the remaining concerts. I invite viewers to email me with candidates for inclusion on the Best Of 2012 Leonard Cohen Tour Video Setlist.

  1. The popularity of a given song with videographers is a major determinant in these selections.  Some songs are featured in many uploaded videos from most or all the concerts while others are rarely recorded. Also, it should be noted that only complete videos of a song’s performance are considered for this listing. []
  2. Note: Setlists for three individual concerts from the 2012 Leonard Cohen World Tour are also available:

Ghent Video Setlist: Best video of each song from the 1st 2012 Tour concert, held Aug 12, 2012 in Ghent [33/33 songs]
Amsterdam Videos Setlist: Best video of each song from the 1st 2012 Amsterdam show (Aug 21, 2012) [29/29 songs]
Helsinki Videos Setlist: Best video of each song from the Sept 2, 2012 Helsinki show [26/31 songs] []

  3. “An approximation of a combined setlist of the shows” is code for “Dance Me To The End of Love” is the first song, “Closing Time” and “Save The Last Dance For Me” are near the end, and all the others are guesswork. []
  4. First live  performance of Light As The Breeze by Leonard Cohen. Light As The Breeze was released in 1992 on Leonard Cohen’s The Future album. Until the August 14, 2012 concert at Ghent, however, Cohen had performed the song only in the studio. []

  1. Many thanks for this superb distillation, Allan.
Will you announce if a video gets superseded?
    Keep up the good work.

    • I’ve been thinking about this. For now, the only practical method is listing the date of the most recent alteration to the list (see bottom line of widget in the far right sidebar) but I’m looking into a method that wouldn’t require readers to constantly check that update line, such as the option for an email notification.

  2. Thank you, wonderful collection. I was at Kilmainham on Sept 12th, this brings it all flooding back. It was a truly amazing evening. Long may Leonard continue to delight us.

  3. Thank You for your music !

  4. Hi , I am a bit confused about how Lenord could have played in Ghent and Dublin on the 12th Aug. I was at his concert in Dublin and it was the 11th sept.

    • Well, Leonard does work in mysterious ways. In this case, however, the Dublin date is a typo with “Sept” mistakenly replaced by “Aug.” The correct date is, of course, Sept 12, 2012 (one of the four Leonard Cohen Dublin dat4s in 2012) – as is indicated on the videos themselves. Thanks for calling this typo, now corrected, to my attention.

  5. Thanks for this – memories of Ghent coming flooding back. Let’s hope there’s never a ‘closing time’ for Leonard!

  6. What about “Ain’t No Cure for Love”?

  7. I’m a long time fan from the 1970’s who couldn’t get to any of these 2012 concerts,so thank you so much for posting these videos. The Man still has it, doesn’t he?

  8. The concert it was wonderful.

  13. I first stumbled upon LC way back when, as a 16 y.o. adolescent, I read, quite by chance, Beautiful Losers, The Favourite Game. Then discovered he also sang, buying “Songs” in 71 in Germany. Irremediably hooked since then, I attended the 74 concert in Madrid (is there any accessible film footage of that?) and had an incredible emotional experience in Madrid a few weeks ago… As many, I just should say: Thank you. Thank you for all this.

  14. Hendrik and Alison

We missed his 2010 tour by 3 days and can you believe our great joy when we discovered that the Man would be performing in Barcelona (our favourite city in the world) in October. We travelled there all the way from South Africa – one of the most magical and emotional moments in the most perfect setting in a most beautiful city. Thank you Leonard and your amazing co-musicians – especially Sharon with a most haunting rendition of Alexandra leaving.
